COURSES OFFERED IN TWO OR MORE FIELDS
Course Description
  1. Mechanical characteristics of pavement materials.
  2. Basic differences between road pavements and airport pavements.
  3. Traffic considerations in pavement design.
  4. Detailed calculation of intensive quantities.
  5. Mechanical wear and failure of pavements.
  6. Principles of pavement design: Empirical and analytical methods for flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid pavements.
  7. Pavement design methodologies.
  8. Quality control of pavements and acceptance.

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the design and dimensioning of pavements, taking into account the mechanical properties of materials, traffic conditions, and environmental impacts.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of pavements.
  • Apply engineering methods for the analysis and design of pavements.
  • Estimate the traffic loads and the strength requirements.
  • Use geotechnical and laboratory data for material selection and sizing.
  • Recognise the impact of environmental and operational parameters on the long-term behaviour of pavements.
  • Describe the quality control requirements at the various stages of pavement construction and during the final acceptance.
  • Interpret the content and significance of the Tender Documents for a road construction project.
