The structure of the Undergraduate Studies Program (ΠΠΣ) was based on the following axes:
-
Harmonization with modern, recognized curricula in Greece and abroad.
-
Coverage of all fundamental and modern knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering and the possibility of choosing a specialization.
-
Full utilization of the Department's facilities (Laboratories, Computing centers, etc.).
-
Drafting the Framework Curriculum with the recognition of professional rights as the main guiding principle.
-
Developing the ΠΠΣ with certification as the main guiding principle.
Each semester course in the curriculum includes a number of "credit units" according to ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). ECTS credit points are based on the workload students need to achieve the expected learning outcomes. Each semester includes 30 ECTS. The total number of ECTS required to obtain the degree is 300. 30 ECTS are awarded for the Diploma Thesis, which is undertaken in the 9th and 10th semesters of study. The distribution of credit units ensures a balanced workload across semesters and the comparability of the degree at a European level, enhancing the possibility of mobility and study recognition between institutions.
The Department of Civil Engineering's curriculum is organized around four main Specializations, which meet the contemporary needs of the field and the job market. These specializations are offered in the later years of study, allowing students to delve deeper into selected scientific fields within the discipline. The available directions are as follows:
-
Structural Engineering
-
Hydraulic Engineering and Environment
-
Transportation Engineering and Road Construction
-
Geotechnical Engineering
The courses cover all the basic scientific areas of Civil Engineering. The first seven (7) semesters of study exclusively include core courses, which provide students with the necessary theoretical and technical background across a wide range of the field. In the eighth (8th) semester, students, in addition to the core courses, are required to choose one of four (4) specialization tracks. Choosing a specialization offers the opportunity to focus and delve deeper into specific subject areas, enhancing the scientific training and professional prospects of graduates. The courses are divided into three main categories:
-
Foundation Courses (General Background) -(13 courses offered)
-
Core Courses (Specialized Foundation) (Offered courses: 29 Compulsory and 6 Elective)
-
In-Depth Knowledge Courses (44 courses offered)
The ΠΠΣ was drafted in a way that meets the basic criteria for recognizing the professional rights of graduates set by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs in accordance with Article 66 of Law 4610/2019. Specifically:
1. It's five years old.
2. The curriculum and diploma title correspond to the core specialization of a Civil Engineer.
3. The curriculum includes courses that ensure:
-
The foundation in basic sciences.
-
The development of core courses across the entire range of the subject matter.
-
In-depth and high-level mastery of knowledge within the scope of the civil engineering field of study.
-
Acquiring knowledge of problem-solving methodology and the methodology of system and application analysis, synthesis, and design.
-
The development of research skills.
4. The ΠΠΣ includes the completion of a two-semester Diploma Thesis on a topic related to the field of civil engineering.
5. The Department has well-equipped and organized laboratories for student training.
