COURSES OFFERED IN TWO OR MORE FIELDS
Course Description
  1. Additional foundation topics: intensity of foundation design for seismic actions, selection of plan dimensions based on soil bearing capacity, sizing of footing beams, perimeter walls of basements, general foundation levelling.
  2. Check of the limit states of serviceability of reinforced concrete.
  3. Stairs: Straight and spiral stairs, design and construction configuration.
  4. Plastic behaviour of reinforced concrete members: confinement, plasticity of curvatures, rotations, and displacements, plastic hinge.
  5. Design and node adequacy checks.
  6. Design of seismic walls, large lightly reinforced walls.
  7. Design and dimensioning of reinforced concrete buildings, combining knowledge of reinforced concrete, statics, dynamics, and seismic design.
  8. Applications of reinforced concrete in infrastructure projects: Retaining walls, culverts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Calculates the design intensity of the foundation for seismic actions.
  • Select the dimensions of the foundation plan based on the bearing capacity of the soil.
  • Apply foundations with strip footings, with peripheral basement walls, with general bedding.
  • Design a reinforced concrete structure in a state of functionality.
  • Solve and dimensions straight and spiral staircases.
  • Shape the plastic hinge regions of structural members, understanding and applying the concepts of overstrength and ductility in terms of curvatures, rotations, and displacements.
  • Solve and size beam-column joints.
  • Design and size seismic walls, including lightly reinforced walls.
  • Combine knowledge of reinforced concrete, statics, dynamics, and seismic design for the design and sizing of reinforced concrete buildings.
  • Design and size retaining walls and culverts.
