Course Description
  1. Health & Safety, and the role of the Safety Engineer.
  2. Design of construction site layouts – construction site organization.
  3. Construction equipment: uses and characteristics, capital investment and operating costs. Fundamental concepts. Equipment performance and productivity, operational analysis, and cost assessment. Earthmoving operations: loosening, excavation, loading, hauling, spreading, and compaction. Operation and performance of construction equipment: basic equipment work cycle, common equipment characteristics, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), operational analysis and cost estimation of basic construction activities (excavation, loading and hauling of soils, dozing, soil compaction, and grading).
  4. Applications for estimating equipment and crew productivity and hourly operating costs.

Learning Outcomes

The course introduces students to the production of civil engineering works, with emphasis on health and safety requirements, construction site organization activities, quantity take-off and measurement of works, and the management of construction equipment.

  • Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Distinguish between different types of construction equipment and their respective applications.
  • Calculate quantity take-offs for basic construction activities.
  • Design basic construction site layouts.
  • Apply fundamental principles of health and safety in construction projects and worksites.
  • Estimate the productivity and cost of basic construction activities.
  • Apply operational analysis methods to estimate the productivity of construction equipment, both in standalone operation and in combined operation as part of an equipment fleet or crew.
