Course Description
  1. Seismic actions.
  2. Seismic response of a structural system.
  3. Response spectra. Plasticity.
  4. Seismic Building Code (Eurocode 8).
  5. Analysis methods: (i) linear and (ii) nonlinear analysis.
  6. Formation of buildings from reinforced concrete.
  7. Design and detailing rules for reinforced concrete buildings.
  8. Introduction to passive and active structural control systems.
  9. Typical cases of building damage due to earthquakes.
  10. Introduction to the technologies and applications of repairing load-bearing structures in buildings.

Learning Outcomes

With the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • It appropriately shapes a structure based on the fundamental principles of seismic design.
  • It analyses a structure based on the seismic code.
  • It identifies the causes of damage to structures from earthquakes.
  • It selects appropriate response control systems for the protection of structures from seismic actions.
  • It recognises and explains the basic principles of repairs and reinforcements of structures.
