Course Description
  1. Types of foundations. Shallow and deep foundations.
  2. Bearing capacity of soils for shallow foundations. Permissible values based on regulations.
  3. Methods for calculating and estimating settlements of shallow foundations. On-site testing methods. Permissible settlement values based on regulations.
  4. Design of shallow foundations (individual footings, footing beams, general raft foundations) for limit state of serviceability and failure.
  5. Deep foundations with piles: construction methods and applications. Evaluation of the bearing capacity of driven and bored (cast-in-place) piles in cohesive and cohesionless soils.
  6. Estimation of settlements of single piles. Bearing capacity and settlement of pile groups.
  7. Principles for the design of shallow and deep foundations in accordance with Eurocode 7.

Learning Outcomes

With the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Calculate the bearing capacity of soils for shallow foundations in different types of soils.
  • Dentifie and compare the expected foundation settlements with the permissible values according to the regulations.
  • Design shallow foundations for limit states of failure and serviceability.
  • Calculate the bearing capacity and settlements of single piles and pile groups.
  • Evaluate the results of foundation and bracing calculations in terms of safety, deformability, and cost-effectiveness of the project.
