Course Description
  1. Basic knowledge of urban planning. Relationship between the building and the broader urban environment. Systematic approach to the methods of analysis, documentation, and evaluation of historical settlement ensembles.
  2. Institutional framework. Protection policy. International conventions for the protection of historic cities.
  3. Philosophy of the protection and restoration of architectural ensembles. Trends - Schools. Opinions on architectural heritage.
  4. Objects of protection and restoration. Historical urban areas. Traditional settlements. Historical landscapes. Production and structure of urban space. Networks of settlements.
  5. History of the creation of European cities. Sociological dimension.
  6. Urban environment. Organization of uses and networks.
  7. Regeneration of residential complexes. Needs that necessitate redevelopment. Peculiarities of historical settlements. Terminology of regeneration.
  8. Typology of redevelopments in terms of the scale of the intervention. Typology of redevelopments in terms of the treatment of architectural shells. Typology of redevelopments in terms of the type of intervention and the form of utilisation of a historical settlement ensemble. Typology of redevelopments in terms of the degree of preservation of the social composition of the historical settlement ensemble.

 

Learning Outcomes

The purpose of the course is for students to acquire the necessary knowledge to evaluate an architectural ensemble and to use design and legislative tools for preparing a protection study.

With the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Start with a detailed recognition of the current situation, general characteristics of the space, typological and morphological characteristics, data analysis, problem diagnosis, intervention possibilities.
  • Continue with a synthetic process - drafting a protection study (evaluation and degree of protection of buildings, rehabilitation of the historical ensemble, urban planning scheme, special urban planning regulation, architectural and urban planning interventions).
  • Develop proposals for the protection, promotion, and revival of historical centers and ensembles.
