Course Description
  1. General information about prefabrication: Disadvantages and advantages of prefabrication, definitions of prefabricated construction.
  2. Types of prefabricated elements and prefabrication materials.
  3. Technology of materials for the production of casting components. Methods of production, storage, transportation, and assembly.
  4. Design of members from precast concrete elements: Slabs, beams, columns.
  5. Diaphragm action of floors in precast beams.
  6. Connections and joints of precast concrete elements.
  7. Seismic behaviour of precast concrete members.
  8. Construction configuration of precast concrete beams.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of the course is the education and understanding of the basic principles of precast concrete systems and the perception of how they operate.

With the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain general information about prefabrication, definitions, disadvantages, and advantages compared to conventional construction.
  • Utilise prefabrication in modern construction.
  • Explain the types of prefabricated elements and the methods of construction, production, storage, transportation, and assembly of prefabricated elements.
  • Apply the basic design principles of precast concrete members and structures, design the connections of the members, and design for the flexural behaviour of the construction.
