Introduction to the Finite Element Method. Finite elements of plane strain. Linear finite elements, interface elements, isoparametric elements Composition, boundary conditions, resolution, results. Applications in Geotechnical Engineering, soil simulation, structures, and loads. Linear and nonlinear soil behaviour. Constitutive models for simulating the elastoplastic behaviour of soil. Theory and statutory simulations of critical situations. Non-linear numerical analysis using the finite element method. Application in the analysis of geotechnical works (foundations, excavations, embankments, shoring, underground works). Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: Apply the fundamental principles of simulating geotechnical engineering problems. Select and appropriately utilise constitutive models for the description of the non-linear mechanical behaviour of soil materials. Develop numerical simulations of geotechnical projects and performs non-linear analyses based on the requirements of the problem. Use finite element software for the modelling and analysis of foundations, piles, retaining walls, slopes, embankments, and tunnels. Evaluate and interpret the results of the analyses, documenting the conclusions regarding the safety and functionality of the projects.
