Course Description
  1. The subject of the course is the study, analysis, and sizing of various types of deep foundations, and specifically pile foundations. It includes the determination of loading, the calculation of the stress state, and the design process, reinforcement, and construction configuration based on regulations. More specifically, within the framework of the course, the following modules will be taught:
  2. Types of piles and construction methods.
  3. Calculation of the bearing capacity of a single pile and a group of piles under (a) axial loading and (b) lateral loading.
  4. Calculation of settlements for an individual pile and a group of piles.
  5. Special topics in the study of pile foundations (pile-soil interaction, nonlinear pile analysis, load tests, negative friction).

Learning Outcomes

With the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify and document the selection criteria for the appropriate type of deep foundation based on soil and loading conditions.
  • Identify and compare the various types of piles and their applications in civil engineering projects.
  • Calculate the bearing capacity and behaviour of individual piles and groups of piles under axial and lateral loading.
  • Design pile foundations and verify their adequacy according to the requirements of Eurocode 7.
  • Analyse the basic principles of design and stability of excavations and temporary or permanent support structures.
