Course Description

Linear algebra: Tables, limits and linear systems. Vectors in plane and space, products of vectors. Basic concepts and operations of complex numbers, trigonometric form of a complex number. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, matrix diagonalization.

Infinitesimal calculus of single variable functions: Inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. Derivatives of functions and their applications. Sequences and series, power series and Taylor series. Indefinite integral, basic methods of integration. Definite integral and its applications. Generalized integrals of 1st and 2nd kind.

Learning Outcomes: The course is the basic introductory mathematics course. The syllabus aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of both Linear Algebra and the calculus of functions of one variable. The knowledge covered is necessary for the Mathematics courses taught in subsequent semesters, as well as for many Civil Engineering specialty courses.

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Effectively use Linear Algebra and Single Variable Function Calculus in subsequent courses in the curriculum.
  • To do mathematical modelling of various problems in Civil Engineering in which concepts from the above Mathematics modules are used.
