Course Description
  1. Introduction to the design of steel structures in accordance with Eurocode 3.
  2. Limit states design of steel structures.
  3. Actions. Wind loads. Load combinations.
  4. Classification of steel cross-sections.
  5. Steel structural systems.
  6. Cross-section resistance of members in bending and shear.
  7. Design of steel beams.
  8. Cross-section resistance under combined bending and axial force.
  9. Stability of individual members. Design of compression members. Flexural buckling.
  10. Lateral–torsional buckling of structural members.
  11. Design of members subjected to biaxial bending and compression.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • Classify steel cross-sections.
  • Calculate the load-bearing capacity of steel members in tension, compression, bending, and shear.
  • Determine the load-bearing capacity of members subject to buckling.
  • Use Eurocode 3 in the design of steel structures.
