Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide the necessary knowledge for the computer-based modeling and analysis of structures. Computational methods for the analysis of linear and surface structural systems are presented and implemented using appropriate computer software.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Formulate the basic principles of Computer-Aided Structural Analysis.
  • Explain the matrix analysis of linear structures using the stiffness method and its implementation in relevant computer software.
  • Compute the stiffness matrices of members of linear structural systems.
  • Assemble the global stiffness matrix of a structure and solve the corresponding system of equations for the unknown displacements.
  • Use the stiffness method and relevant computer software to analyze linear structural systems (plane trusses, plane frames, space trusses, plane grids, space frames) and solve Civil Engineering structures (buildings, bridges, trussed roofs, etc.).
  • Explain the fundamental principles of the Finite Element Method and the use of corresponding computer software.
  • Evaluate the structural behavior of a system and select the appropriate finite element model for its simulation.
  • Model and simulate structures using the Finite Element Method.
  • Analyze surface structures using the Finite Element Method and computer software.
  • Use the Finite Element Method and relevant computer software to solve Civil Engineering problems and structures (buildings, bridges, retaining walls, etc.).
  • Explain the fundamental principles of the Boundary Element Method and the use of corresponding computer software.
  • Model and simulate structures using the Boundary Element Method.
  • Analyze surface structures using the Boundary Element Method and computer software.
  • Use the Boundary Element Method and relevant computer software to solve Civil Engineering problems and structures.
  • Analyze structures under different loading conditions.
